What
kind of articles are in the magazine?
If you’re a leader of a
campus group or organization, you’ll find the articles useful. We tell you
how to run your group more effectively and ethically. You’ll learn how to
promote your event, raise money, recruit and retain volunteers, deal with
your administrators and campus media, write a mission statement, find a good
advisor, and more.
Where
do you get your article ideas?
Article ideas come from a
variety of sources including campus visits, conferences, workshops, focus
groups, e-mails, college newspapers, and reader tips.
Who
writes the articles?
Most of the articles are
written by our experienced editors, staff writers, editorial assistants, and
student interns, who interview hundreds of sources throughout the year to
craft the articles you see in the magazine.
Does
the magazine accept freelance articles?
Yes. If you’d like to
write for Student Leader, contact Associate
Editor
Anna Campitelli for more details. You should query us before
you send an article, as we have a specific style that you need to follow. We
also plan content sometimes as much as a year ahead, so it’s wise to let us
know what you’d like to write about before you start so we can avoid
duplication.
Can
I submit an article idea?
Yes, we’re receptive to
hearing any article ideas from anyone at anytime. That’s how we get most of
the ideas for articles you see at our web site and in our magazine. Our
readers talk to us, usually by e-mail, but sometimes by phone and in
person when Editor Butch Oxendine speaks at leadership conventions
and conferences (See Need a speaker?)
How
do I order copies?
You can
order at
our web site, but you’ll have to pay by phone or mail. We do accept credit
cards, purchase orders, or checks for payment.
Can
I reprint an article?
Yes. If you need fewer
than 100 copies, there’s no charge. Just follow the instructions at
Permissions. If you need more than 100 copies, we’ll need you to order
professional reprints for a nominal fee.
Can
I get a back issue?
Sure. A limited (very
limited) number of back issues dating back to the first issue are available
for sale. Call 1-888-547-6310 to order or write
info@studentleader.com. Shipping charges and sales tax (when applicable)
will be added to the order.
Will
you donate copies for our conference/event?
In most cases, yes. We donate copies for participants in dozens of
leadership conventions and conferences each year. We ask you to
tell us about your event, provide contact information (name, title, phone
number, mailing address, e-mail address), and tell us when you need the
copies and how many we should mail. If you can list us in your program as a
“donor” or “sponsor” that would be appreciated as well (and please send us a
copy of the program).
What
is the “SG Salary Survey”?
It’s an ongoing national
study of what compensation, if any, elected campus leaders receive for their
service. So far, nearly 400 schools have participated. The results,
analysis, letters about the study, and more are available by clicking here.
If you’ve never participated, we encourage you to submit your answers. If
your school is already listed, please help us keep the information current.
What
is the “Find the Perfect Conference” database?
It’s the nation’s only
fully searchable database of upcoming leadership conferences and
conventions. Currently, there are nearly 100 events listed. You can search
by a variety of parameters, including location, cost, and topics covered.
Our editors have attended many of these events and we rank those that we
attend. If you’ve been to one of the conferences, you can even comment on
how useful or enjoyable it was to you. If you’re a conference sponsor, we
invite you to list your event. And if your event is already included, please
update it regularly.
How
can I get interviewed for an article?
It’s easy. Just call us
at 1-888-547-6310 or 352-373-6907 or send us e-mail at
info@studentleader.com. We’re always interested in speaking to talented
campus leaders for upcoming articles.
Do
you have interns? How do I apply?
Yes, editorial and public
relations internships are offered during the fall, spring, and summer
semesters. You do not have to be a journalism major to intern, but writing,
design, editing, or public relations experience is preferred. Internships
are unpaid, but sometimes perks are available to senior interns. To apply
for an internship, just send a resume, cover letter, and writing samples to
PO Box 14081, Gainesville, Florida 32604. For more information, contact Editor
Anna Campitelli.
How
do I get an editor to come to our campus?
Editor in Chief Butch
Oxendine speaks professionally and attends about 20 conferences or
conventions each year. While he prefers to personally attend national,
statewide, or major regional events, it’s possible that he could speak or
present workshop sessions on your campus. Please see Need a
Speaker? for
more details.
How
do I update my shipping information?
You can call our
toll-free line, 1-888-547-6310, or you can send e-mail to
info@studentleader.com. Under our Subscriptions section of the web site,
you can update your record instantly.
What
is the
“SG Effectiveness Test”?
It’s a tool to help you
gauge just how effective your organization really is. You can determine your
strengths and can identify your weaknesses. If you score 90 or above,
Student Leader is interested in knowing! Please
tell us—we may write
about you.
Are
all articles in the magazine at your Web site?
No. We choose expanded
versions of key print articles to appear at our Web site.
Are
there articles at the Web site that don’t appear in the print version of the
magazine?
Yes, the
Web Exclusives section of the
Web site
contains original articles that can’t be found in print.
What
is “Featured Articles?”
Student Leader
editors get tons of great story ideas all of the time. Unfortunately, due to
the limited amount of space in the magazine, we aren’t always able to
develop articles about each one. However, space at the Web site is limitless
so we encourage our readers to develop original stories of their own. New
articles are posted monthly during the academic calendar year. If you’re
interested in earning a byline, click here
for more information.
