What is Student Leader?
Student Leader
is the nation’s premier magazine for campus leaders at colleges and universities across the country. Founded in 1992, the magazine now serves hundreds of thousands of students and student affairs professionals.

Who reads Student Leader?
About 200,000 readers see each issue of Student Leader and about 100,000 readers annually visit our web site. Campus leaders, usually involved in Student Government, Greek organizations, and various other special-interest clubs and organizations, at 1,400 colleges and universities nationwide. Student activities professionals and student affairs administrators also are among the readers.

How do they get copies?
The copies are mailed via UPS and the post office and are delivered two times per year, in October and March. About 85 percent of the schools that get Student Leader pay for their supply of copies.

Do you have to pay to get copies?
If you don’t already get the magazine, yes, you do have to pay. Click here for Subscription information. If you're an ASGA member institution, you can get some copies of Student Leader for free.

Who publishes Student Leader?
Oxendine Publishing in Gainesville, Florida. The company also publishes the 21-year-old statewide magazine Florida Leader (see www.floridaleader.com) and is the founding sponsor of the 18th annual Florida College Student of the Year Awards (see www.floridaleader.com/soty). Oxendine also publishes books (see Order Books) and sends speakers to conventions and conferences nationwide (see Need a speaker?)

What kind of articles are in the magazine?
If you’re a leader of a campus group or organization, you’ll find the articles useful. We tell you how to run your group more effectively and ethically. You’ll learn how to promote your event, raise money, recruit and retain volunteers, deal with your administrators and campus media, write a mission statement, find a good advisor, and more.

Where do you get your article ideas?
Article ideas come from a variety of sources including campus visits, conferences, workshops, focus groups, e-mails, college newspapers, and reader tips.

Who writes the articles?
Most of the articles are written by our experienced editors, staff writers, editorial assistants, and student interns, who interview hundreds of sources throughout the year to craft the articles you see in the magazine.

Does the magazine accept freelance articles?
Yes. If you’d like to write for Student Leader, contact Associate Editor Anna Campitelli for more details. You should query us before you send an article, as we have a specific style that you need to follow. We also plan content sometimes as much as a year ahead, so it’s wise to let us know what you’d like to write about before you start so we can avoid duplication.

Can I submit an article idea?
Yes, we’re receptive to hearing any article ideas from anyone at anytime. That’s how we get most of the ideas for articles you see at our web site and in our magazine. Our readers talk to us, usually by e-mail, but sometimes by phone and in person when Editor Butch Oxendine speaks at leadership conventions and conferences (See Need a speaker?)

How do I order copies?
You can order at our web site, but you’ll have to pay by phone or mail. We do accept credit cards, purchase orders, or checks for payment.

Can I reprint an article?
Yes. If you need fewer than 100 copies, there’s no charge. Just follow the instructions at Permissions. If you need more than 100 copies, we’ll need you to order professional reprints for a nominal fee.

Can I get a back issue?
Sure. A limited (very limited) number of back issues dating back to the first issue are available for sale. Call 1-888-547-6310 to order or write info@studentleader.com. Shipping charges and sales tax (when applicable) will be added to the order.

Will you donate copies for our conference/event?
In most cases, yes. We donate copies for participants in dozens of leadership conventions and conferences each year. We ask you to tell us about your event, provide contact information (name, title, phone number, mailing address, e-mail address), and tell us when you need the copies and how many we should mail. If you can list us in your program as a “donor” or “sponsor” that would be appreciated as well (and please send us a copy of the program).

What is the “SG Salary Survey”?
It’s an ongoing national study of what compensation, if any, elected campus leaders receive for their service. So far, nearly 400 schools have participated. The results, analysis, letters about the study, and more are available by clicking here. If you’ve never participated, we encourage you to submit your answers. If your school is already listed, please help us keep the information current.

What is the “Find the Perfect Conference” database?
It’s the nation’s only fully searchable database of upcoming leadership conferences and conventions. Currently, there are nearly 100 events listed. You can search by a variety of parameters, including location, cost, and topics covered. Our editors have attended many of these events and we rank those that we attend. If you’ve been to one of the conferences, you can even comment on how useful or enjoyable it was to you. If you’re a conference sponsor, we invite you to list your event. And if your event is already included, please update it regularly.

How can I get interviewed for an article?
It’s easy. Just call us at 1-888-547-6310 or 352-373-6907 or send us e-mail at info@studentleader.com. We’re always interested in speaking to talented campus leaders for upcoming articles.

Do you have interns? How do I apply?
Yes, editorial and public relations internships are offered during the fall, spring, and summer semesters. You do not have to be a journalism major to intern, but writing, design, editing, or public relations experience is preferred. Internships are unpaid, but sometimes perks are available to senior interns. How do I get an editor to come to our campus?
Editor in Chief Butch Oxendine speaks professionally and attends about 20 conferences or conventions each year. While he prefers to personally attend national, statewide, or major regional events, it’s possible that he could speak or present workshop sessions on your campus. How do I update my shipping information?

What is the “SG Effectiveness Test”?
It’s a tool to help you gauge just how effective your organization really is. You can determine your strengths and can identify your weaknesses. If you score 90 or above, Student Leader is interested in knowing! Please tell us—we may write about you.

Are all articles in the magazine at your Web site?
No. We choose expanded versions of key print articles to appear at our Web site.

Are there articles at the Web site that don’t appear in the print version of the magazine?
Yes, the Web Exclusives section of the Web site contains original articles that can’t be found in print.

What is “Featured Articles?”
Student Leader
editors get tons of great story ideas all of the time. Unfortunately, due to the limited amount of space in the magazine, we aren’t always able to develop articles about each one. However, space at the Web site is limitless so we encourage our readers to develop original stories of their own. New articles are posted monthly during the academic calendar year.
